TBT Transitional Board

Committee reports:
Housing- Herb Peck, reporting
Committee divided work into 3 sections: have to, want to; and maybes.
Goal is to create a new building; a lot of work needs to be done. Meetings have resulted in unanimous agreements.
The walls at The Suburban Temple will be stripped of everything; refinished, repaired. Herb distributed a list of work to be done and estimates.
Work plan utilizes custodial staff from Temple Judea to save funds.
The handicap ramp needs to be repaired, made up to code. A congregant, Felicia Denaro suggested that there are possibly grants available to bring building up to ADA guidelines. (She will research this).
Bingo has destroyed the carpet; the plan is to replace carpet with grooved porcelain tile in the lobby. The estimate for this is approx $15,000; it was said that this may be a low estimate, as the floor would have to be leveled to allow the placement of tile.
No work can be started until after the 29th of June. Work will begin on that Monday. 4 Windows of stained glass will be installed at a rate of one a day. The underlying windows need to be replaced. Company hired will be Retail Project Management. There will be one window that can be opened, and it is expected that the air conditioning/circulation system will be improved so as to allow for better air quality.
Suburbans’ Ark will be moved downstairs into the Youth Lounge area, place to be determined. The Ark may need to be taken apart in order to get it to the lower level.
Outside concrete to be replaced with brick. Estimate is to the street.
Front restrooms will be renovated to be handicapped accessible.
Roof Repair; estimated to cost $140,000.00. Cost is for a rubberized roof, new leaders, and gutters.
Volunteers are needed to dismantle items from the Temples
A basement sump pump is needed so as to eliminate flooding in the boiler room, where electric is located.
Renovation is planned for the teachers lounge; mold/mildew issues. This room will be the temporary Library. The current library will be modified to house Rabbi Kramer’s office.
Custodial Staff: Custodial staff will be outsourced; an outside company will hire existing staff. They will perform maintenance duties as well as cleaning. Staff will be paid on an hourly basis. This change does not need to be voted on by the congregation. (Model mirrors Temple Judea’s’ custodial staffing).
Herb plans to be done with renovations by the High Holy Days.
We discussed the security of the children; access to school thru various doors, safety of children during renovations, etc. Doors need to be locked. Committee needs to work on access issues.
Bruce asked if water can be kept out instead of removed
Financing: after attorney general approves the merger, we will commingle the funds. The plan is to not to go into debt for renovations.
Art Committee: Robin Wexler, Barbara Held reporting
The front section of the lobby will be dedicated to the past. The Holocaust Memorial corner was described.
Art items will be stored, displayed in rotation. Aesthetics oversight committee is planned.
The past Officers of Legacy congregations are important, and will be recognized, decided by committee, in a beautiful, cohesive lovely manner.
Religious Services: Jan Friedman, Lucie Taustine reporting
Stated that the committee worked well together. The recommendations are as follows:
Friday nite & HHD services to begin at 8PM. Family service, which will be the 1st Friday of the month, is planned to start at 7:30.
Non-Jew role in service: entire family will be invited to light Shabbat candles. The children will carry the Torah.
There has been no final decision regarding Bima honorees.
The Yarzheit list will be very long; too long to recite every name. Lights will be lit, and if the family wants the name to be recited out loud, the temple office will need to be contacted. The Mishaberah list will be handled via phone also. The Rabbi will ask for names during the service as well. There will be a list outside of the sanctuary prior to Shabbat services for this purpose as well.
The Rabbis will create the service, utilizing the new prayer book, Mishkan T’fillah, and both will sit on the Bima. They will alternate roles. Haftorah will be read on Friday night. Kippot & Tallit are optional.
High Holy Day schedule:
Rosh Hashanah: 9:00-9:45 ticketed family service. (youth group can be involved). 10:30; student service; only children, in youth lounge, to run concurrently with ticketed regular services. Volunteers needed to chaperone. 2nd day Rosh Hashanah service will not be a ticketed service; open to the community.
Yom Kippur: Kol Nidre 8PM. 3 PM ticketed afternoon service. Yiskor at 4PM. (open to community) Activities are planned in between services. May cascade to lower level; a screen can be added for those who need to sit downstairs.
We discussed allowing people in for Yiskor without tickets; we must allow members in first.
Religious school staff had been offered complimentary tickets in the past; will this continue? Yes; no cost to the Temple.
Consecration will be held one week after Simhat Torah.
Sukkah: there will be a Sukkah both inside and outside the Temple.
The service will include the following customs; standing during the Hatzi Kaddish, and standing for the last verse of Lecha Dodi. A learner’s service is planned. It is expected that the changes will be easily segued into the current services.
Nursery School Committee: Tessa Kean reporting
Current director will not be retained; too expensive. Candidates are being interviewed.
There is currently one registrant for the summer/fall program. Tuition will be frozen at this year’s rate. There is a one year plan; if this does not work, having a nursery school needs to be reconsidered. If there are 46 children, we can use a part time director. If there are more than 46 children, we need a full time director. This can be a financial drain.
Torah Committee: Judy Lichtenstein, Margaret Batby reporting
Distributed a “save the date” flyer for the 06/29/08 Service at Temple Judea and Torah march & luncheon as we move west to join The Suburban Temple as Temple B’nai Torah. The committee described the march, which will be part walk, part automobile. It will end at 11:30 (at The Suburban Temple building), and then brunch will be served. A copy of a merger service was obtained from another Temple, this has been given to clergy to utilize. Should politicians be invited? They do come with security, publicists… We should invite the interfaith clergy council. Event does need to be publicized. There are promises of donations to defray the cost of lunch.
We discussed the distribution of the extra Torahs; they will be given to Crane Lake camp, and to a Temple in Florida that has several Suburban Temple members. A scribe will come to inspect all the Torahs.
Holocaust Memorial: Report deferred to a future meeting reporting
Dedications: Phyllis Maus, Lynne Happes reporting
Committee distributed a list of recommendations:
Leaves on trees to be redone to match Temple Judea’s because the leaves on The Suburban Temples trees are a different shape, and in poor condition (finish is stripped). The leaves will cost approximately $1.90 & engraving is .15 a letter. (Better prices in bulk). Current tree trunks can be turned into scrap metal. The cast bronze company has recommended a grove of trees. Committee recommended the use of mahogany paneling behind the trees-cheaper-more flexible.
Pew dedications; many available. Temple Judea’s pew markers will fill in the current seating.
Prayer book will be alphabetized, dedications copied.
President plaques will be made into a combination plaque, utilizing both congregations.
Memorial Plaques: Mickey Horwitz, Susan Beller reporting
The plan is convert existing nameplates to 2x5 inches in order to increase capacity. This will cost approximately $33,000. Price includes wiring, boards. Names to go back up in the same order; this will be easier. 6 weeks to finish this project.
On memorial boards there might be an additional cost to change the names on top of some of the boards to Temple Judea and Temple B'nai Torah
There were other items on the agenda for today, but the meeting had run longer than expected. Rita Hofer stated that she would email us with info regarding some of the other items.
Motion made by Rita Hofer
Move to add 4 voting members (from Chai Club, Couples Club and 2 additional members from TJ; PTA?), to the Transitional board, now thru transition year.
This motion passed.
Meeting adjourned after 12:30
